CASTLES AS A SYMBOL OF IDENTITY
ART CULTURE NEW TECHNOLOGIES

days of study, dissemination and live performance
October 2008
Marino, Palombara Sabina, Sambuci, Genazzano, Arsoli

Purpose

The territory does not represent only a geographical area but has to become a laboratory of creativity where different aspects (economy, technology, history, art and tradition) can take shape, thus creating its own identity to communicate in order to stimulate interest and favour artistic and cultural growth.
The identity has to be individuated and strengthened by a symbol as key element of the territory and the community which populates it and recognisable in every circumstance and to all audience targets.
The project Identity European Network: the Castles puts as a symbol of the territory of the province of Rome the Castle for a series of reasons which start on a European level where cultural heritage is recognised as a vehicle of cultural identity. The knowledge of this heritage depends on both the quality of its enhancement and the ability of Europeans to recognise and appreciate Italy and other EU countries' heritage.
From here the need to find some ways suitable to a first reply to these needs of our society, starting from the artistic and cultural heritage identifi ed in the Medieval period common to all over Europe through castles.
The purpose is the creation of a network of European castles which has an only logo, unitary information materials and communication, linked cultural events and a website. Castles will also be a reference and stop point for the itinerary of the Via Francigena which is taking shape from Lazio to Brindisi. All this starting from the Province of Rome.
Young students will be in charge of communication and dissemination.
They are invited to compete through some educational proposals. Infact education plays an important role in establishing the image of a country for the future generations. Education is a double channel of communication:
if students are taught history or geography of another country in a positive sense, the image and existence of those places or events will remain in their memories; if children of a specifi c country are educated to be the most informed supporters of the beauty of their nation, they will certainly be the best ambassadors. It is therefore right to find some methods suitable for this exchange of experiences.

Objectives

From these considerations we can understand that the objectives which can be reached with the events on the theme Castles as a symbold of identity:
art culture new technologies are the following:
1. Organisation of cultural activities coordinated within the framework of different towns of the Province of Rome which will join the project;
2. Knowledge of one’s own cultural roots established by the Middle Ages and cultural growth of the territory with events and performances and other artistic forms connected to the project themes;
3. Also small Town Councils included in a dynamic Network will favour the formation of their public;
4. Presentation of themes to schools which will have to be analysed on a literary and artistic level and subsequent organisation of debates on implemented educational ways and prize-giving ceremonies;
5. Increase in amateurish activities on the territory by favouring the opening of cultural centres.

Expected areas of intervention

The project, for its realisation, works within the framework of:
1. Strengthening the local identity by making the inhabitants of different Town Councils know the history, traditions and cultural heritage which represent their identity;
2. Enhancing cultural heritage through initiatives which stimulate the participation of neighbouring towns, the region and then Italy and Europe for a constructive interexchange;
3. Live perfomances and events which "animate" the historic knowledge;
4. Establishing a network of different Town Councils through castles in order to favour also the smallest town councils;
5. Operating in a network which provides for recurrent events and initiatives which determine fixed and habitual appointments.
